Nancy Levensailor and Danielle Hindes from the Ferguson lab at SUNY Fredonia demonstrate how to make Drosophila Media.

Required Equipment

• 20 quart Groen Steam Kettle (TDH-20 is shown but electric models are also available. Look on E-bay for used kettles.)
• Drosofiller (59-168 Genesee Scientific)
• Narrow vial trays for "Reload System" (59-207GRE Genesee Scientific)
• Power drill. Any model will do. This is an inexpensive alternative to "lab mixers".
• Drywall mixer. (Home Depot)
• 1 L Pyrex measuring cup for corn syrup. (Grocery store)
• Microwave
• Autoclave
• 2 and 4 L plastic beakers. (1201-2000 & 1201-4000 from Fisher Scientific)
• Silicone spatula (Grocery store)
• 5 gallon buckets with lids for storing dry ingredients (Home Depot). This prevents bugs from contaminating the ingredients.
• Cotton bandanas (Walmart)

Ingredients

• Drosophila Agar (66-103 Genesee Scientific)
• Corn Meal (Campus food service)
• Soy Flour (Campus food service)
• Deactivated dry yeast (Campus food service)
• Corn Syrup (Campus food service)
• Propionic Acid (AC14930-0025 Fisher Scientific)

Consumables

• Narrow polystyrene vials for "Reload System" (32-109RL Genesee Scientific)
• Large cotton balls for vials (22-286-247 Fisher Scientific)
• 8 oz. polypropylene bottle (AS-117 Fisher Scientific)
• Bottle flugs (AS-277 Genesee Scientific)
